Medicare is health insurance for people 65 and older as well as people under 65 with certain disabilities.  There are several different parts that make up Medicare and can be confusing.  The following is a brief outline of the different parts.

Medicare Part A Helps cover:

• Inpatient care in hospitals
• Skilled nursing facility care
• Hospice care
• Home health care

Medicare Part B helps cover:

• Services from doctors
• Outpatient care
• Home health care
• Durable medical equipment_

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)

• Is offered and managed by private insurance companies
• Includes at least the equivalent value of coverages of Parts A and B and usually more
• Usually includes Part D drug coverage
• Usually includes additional benefits (some at an additional cost)

 
Medicare Part D (Prescription coverage)

• Is offered and managed by private insurance companies
• Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs

Original Medicare is made up of Parts A and B.  As there are gaps in these coverages, it is recommended that people consider purchasing Medicare Supplement insurance (from private companies) to fill the gaps and limit out of pocket costs.  A Part D drug plan is also recommended to cover prescription costs.
